It is expected that in June or July, a direct sea route from the Cai Cui New Port (Can Tho) belonging to the Saigon New Port Corporation (SNP) to Singapore will be opened and the first shipment is opened from Cuu Long (Mekong Delta) to this island.
The information mentioned above was presented by Mr. Vu Khanh Duong, Director of Southwest Saigon New Port Office, at the workshop on “Impact of the world economy on Vietnam’s fisheries sector” held in Can Tho city on the 28th March.
The opening of the shipping line could take place sooner, if the business community in the Mekong Delta, who directly produces goods, supports this by the SNP.
Mr.Duong further revealed that the unit will accompany the port of Cai Cui to take the first shipment to Singapore as the shipping agent Ben Line.
According to Mr.Duong, the conditions for opening a direct shipping route from Mekong Delta to other countries, including Singapore and vice versa, are now ripe.
Specifically, firstly, the Quan Chanh Bo canal flow was cleared and trains across 1,500 containers passed through; Secondly, Cai Cui New Port has modern machinery and equipment, including the arrangement of electrical outlets for reefer as well as the management and administration of information technology like the Cat Lai port and in Cai Mep.
Upcoming Cai Cui New Port will invest in a container crane system, expanding the warehouse system as well as the electrical outlet for reefer container.
According to Mr.Duong, a survey conducted by this unit last year, there are about 1,900 reefer trains to Singapore each month, and 3,500 containers depart from Cai Cui New Port to Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, the production of goods in the Mekong Delta and direct exports from Cai Cui New Port will have more advantages than the transport to the port of Cat Lai.
Specifically, the first, the empty container to move to the production sites are close proximity, very convenient or transporting goods from the production in the Mekong Delta to the container closure in the port will be faster because of the availability of empty containers ; Second, if the export time in Cat Lai about 24-36 hours, in Cai Cui New port only takes 6-8 hours. “So, the plan of production or delivery of goods does not need to accumulate much, not take time, reduce the risk,” he said.
Another point worth mentioning by Mr. Duong at the conference is the transport of a reefer container from the Mekong Delta to Ho Chi Minh City, it costs at least 7.5 million, so only transport costs, businesses can save a lot.
Mr.Vu Khanh Duong, director of the Southwest Saigon New Port office, said almost all imported and exported goods had to go through the port of this unit. Specifically, with the port of Cat Lai, this unit accounts for 90% market share of export and import containers. Also in Cai Mep port to the US and Europe, this unit accounts for 70% market share.
